Full Description
December 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two type 22 pillbox is visible on aerial photographs from 1945 located at the end of an unfinished road, which would become Lynn Grove, Gorleston (S1). The pillbox is centred on TG 5151 0475. The pillbox presumably formed part of the outer defences of the anti aircraft battery (NHER 32667) to the south. Several rows of anti tank cubes were also placed at this location. The pillbox may have also provided line of fire across the fields to the north.
The pillbox has since been demolished and the Lynn Grove area developed and built upon.
The pillbox is not clearly visible on aerial photographs from 1944 (S2 to S3), although it would be unusual for a pillbox to be constructed so late in the Second World War. It is therefore more likely that the pillbox is effectively camouflaged from identification on these poorer quality images.
S. Massey (NMP), 19 December 2005.
