Map

December 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two spigot mortar emplacement and two civilian air raid shelters are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Crab Lane, along what was to become Chestnut Avenue Bradwell (S1). The site is centred on TG 5120 0423.
The spigot mortar emplacement is centred on TG 5119 0424, the spigot is clearly surrounded by a circular trench with a slight notch trench to the southeast, possible an ammunition locker. At TG 5118 0421, within the garden of what is now 10 Chestnut Avenue, is an air raid shelter, presumably an earth covered Anderson, measuring 3.5m by 2m. To the east, at TG 5123 0425, is a much larger shelter in the back garden of 5 Crab Lane. This square earth covered shelter measures 5.5m across. This has an upstanding square concrete feature to the east, probably the top of an emergency hatch or vent. An additional tall feature is positioned on the southern edge of the mound, although it is not clear whether this is part of the shelter or an existing structure that it has been built up against.
S. Massey (NMP), 19 December 2005.
