Summary

A group of World War Two air raid shelters is visible on aerial photographs within the back gardens of Trafalgar Road East, Gorleston. The shelters are visible as earth covered mounds, probably Anderson shelters, and would have been for the use of families living in the properties. One larger mound identified within Hamilton Place may have been a communal civilian shelter or one associated with a business or establishment.

Map

A group of World War Two air raid shelters is visible on aerial photographs within the back gardens of Trafalgar Road East, Gorleston (S1 and S2). These shelters are visible as earth covered mounds, probably Anderson shelters, and would have been for the use of the families living in the properties. The site is centred on TG 5257 0492.

At TG 5264 0493, within Hamilton Place, is an elongated grass or vegetation covered, oblong mound, measuring 9.5m by 3m. This appears to have a path leading towards it. It is assumed that this is an air raid shelter. To the immediate north is a second slight mound, which could also be a shelter, but this is significantly less well defined than the long oblong mound. It is possible that the large mound represents a communal civilian shelter or one associated with a business or establishment. The other shelters visible on aerial photographs are all much smaller, ranging from 1.5m square up to 4.5m by 2m. The shelters were located within the gardens of numbers 3, 10 to 12, 53, 56, 58 to 59 and 61.
