Summary

A pair of World War Two air raid shelters is visible on aerial photographs within the back gardens of two properties on Church Road, Gorleston. One of the shelters is quite small and is likely to have been an Anderson shelter for the use of the family living in the property. The larger shelter may have served several properties.

A pair of World War Two air raid shelters is visible on aerial photographs within the back gardens of two properties on Church Road, Gorleston (S1). The site is centred on TG 5250 0487. Within the garden of 182 Church Road, centred on TG 5250 0490 and backing onto Trafalgar Road West, is a large earthen cornered shelter, measuring 6m by 3.5m. This either has a central entrance with a covered chamber either side, the western one being much larger. The shelter may have served several properties. A smaller shelter is visible within the garden of 184 Church Road, centred on TG 5250 0484 and measuring 2.5m by 2m. This is likely to have been an Anderson shelter for the use of the family living in the property.
