Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two pillbox, a spigot mortar emplacement and associated structure are visible on aerial photographs on the West Quay, Gorleston (S1). These structures would have formed part of the harbour and quayside defences. The site is centred on TG 5287 0460. The pillbox was a type 22 and was located at TG 5287 0461. The spigot mortar emplacement was at TG 5287 0459 and consisted of a circular spigot within a circular pit. Inbetween these two emplacements in 1945 was a rectangular stone or concrete structure, which may have also fulfilled a military and defensive function, although this was not obvious from the aerial photographs. The pillbox and spigot mortar emplacement are still visible in 1947, however the rectangular structure has been removed (S2). All of the structures have dismantled by 1953 (S3).
