Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of World War Two huts, probably nissens, and other military structures are visible on aerial photographs along the West Quay at Riverside Road and Baker Street junction, Gorleston (S1) and (S2). The site is centred on TG 5288 0432. These structures probably would have been for either troops or supplies for the defences along the quayside and docks.

In August 1944 (S2) a rectangular, curved profile hut, measuring 11m by 5m, and probably a nissen is visible to the south of the site. To the immediate east of this is a rectangular, flat topped concrete structure, measuring 7m by 3m, with a narrower, square front, 1m by 2m. Adjacent to this is a series of conjoined rectangular storage sheds or huts. Some other small rectangular structures are visible, although these may be crates or containers and have not been mapped. Also to the west of the huts is a group of ten square features, all approximately 3m across. It is not clear whether these are tented structures or neatly arranged piles and covered stores of material and therefore these were not mapped. No trace of these features remains in 1954 (S3). By 1945 an additional nissen hut has been constructed to the north of the site (S3). By 1947 the two nissen huts have been removed (S4), the others were removed later and the site has since been built on.
