Summary

Several fragmentary linear ditches visible as cropmarks and vegetation marks on aerial photographs may mark former drains or similar agricultural features, probably dating to the post medieval period. Other marks visible in this area are more likely to be the product of recent agricultural activity or the underlying geology or drainage at the site.

Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Several fragmentary linear ditches are visible as cropmarks/vegetation marks in grass on aerial photographs (S1), (S2), (S3), (S4) and (S5), centred at TG 4553 2206. They are not particularly convincing as archaeological features, most being narrow and rather intermittent, but they could mark drains or similar agricultural features. Their date is unknown but some lead up to, and could be associated with, the post medieval drainage mill (Horsey Mill, NHER 8408) on the east side of the site, while the ditches visible along the north side of the site may correspond with, or at least respect, boundaries depicted on Horsey Enclosure and Tithe Maps, (S6) and (S7) respectively. There is no evidence that any of the mapped features pre-date the post medieval period.

Other vegetation marks are visible in the area but have not been mapped as they are more likely to be the product of recent agricultural activity, drainage (both natural and man-made) or the underlying geology at the site. It is possible, however, that some of the unmapped marks do represent archaeological features: similarly, some of the mapped ditches may be of no archaeological significance.
