Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of linear and curvilinear drainage ditches and channels of medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). These earthworks are centred on TG 4920 0935 in an area of former marshland. Linear drainage ditches are present on a number of different alignments within this group of earthworks. These ditches lead into extant drainage ditches, indicating that they are likely to be of post medieval date. Sections of curvilinear ditch are also present. Some of these join onto the linear drainage ditches, particularly in the northern part of the group. It is likely that some of the curvilinear ditches may have originated as natural channels, but they were incorporated into the drainage pattern during the medieval to post medieval periods. Linear ditches in the northwest of this group of earthworks surround a former drainage pump (NHER 15574). All of these fields had been ploughed and the earthworks levelled by 1970 (S3).
