Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of linear and curvilinear drainage ditches or probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These earthworks are centred on TG 4633 0864 in an area of former marshland. A short section of curvilinear ditch is present in the west of the group. This ditch extends for up to 178m on a roughly northwest to southeast alignment towards a former drainage pump (NHER 10407). It is cut by a modern drainage ditch and is not marked on the 1839 Acle tithe map (S2). It is likely that this ditch is of medieval to post medieval date and it may have originated as a natural channel. In the eastern part of the group is an L shaped drainage ditch, that is still partly extant. This ditch is cut by the 1883 Norwich to Great Yarmouth railway line and is marked on the 1838 South Walsham tithe map (S3). The western part of this ditch, which lies on a northwest to southeast alignment, runs adjacent and parallel to an extant drainage ditch. It is likely that this ditch is of post medieval date. Although these two ditches now lie in Halvergate parish they were formerly in detached portions of Acle and South Walsham parishes.
