Summary

A 15th to 16th century vaulted brick undercroft was found built up against the foundation wall of the Norman Bishop's Palace in 1961. Medieval and post medieval pottery was also recovered.

2 June 1961. Field Observation.
In removing shrubbery from west wall of Bishops Palace, brick roofed vaults uncovered 3.3m (11feet) long east-to-west, 1.5m (5 feet) wide north-to-south. They abut onto what appears to be the foundation wall of the Norman Palace. About 1104 to 1108.
Type of brick suggests 15th to early 16th century date.
Medieval and later sherds and clay pipes.
