Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of World War Two structures is visible on aerial photographs on the South Pier, Gorleston (S1 to S3). The function of these structures is unknown, but it is possible that they were related to the defence of the harbour and quayside. It is possible that they were related to the operation of the battery at the end of the Pier (NHER 33953). It is also possible that they were either for storage of military equipment and supplies that needed to be transported by boat. The whole of the South Pier has evidence for the loading and storage of equipment. The site is centred on TG 5328 0366.
One of the structures, centred on TG 5329 0367, would appear to be concrete in construction and measures 5m by 4m. The rest of the structures would appear to be more temporary in nature and are either huts or storage containers. The structure nearest the Pier edge towards the eastern end of the site, is quite tall and appears to have a pitched roof. This structure is not visible in February 1941 (S1).
S. Massey (NMP), 23 January 2006.
