Summary

A group of World War Two air raid shelters are visible on aerial photographs within the back gardens on or near Nelson Road, Gorleston. These shelters are visible as earthen covered mounds, probably covering Anderson shelters, and these would have been for the use of the families living in the properties.

A group of World War Two air raid shelters is visible on aerial photographs within the back gardens on or near Nelson Road, Gorleston (S1). These shelters are visible as earthen covered mounds, probably covering Anderson shelters, and these would have been for the use of the families living in the properties. The site is centred on TG 5263 0385, although this point does not correspond with an archaeological feature on the ground.

The majority of the shelters are all approximately 3m by 2m and are located within the gardens of numbers 31, 68, 76 and 77, 80 Nelson Road, 34 England’s Lane, 185 Bell’s Road, 5, 9 and 10 Nile Cottages, Nelson Road. A shelter is also located within the yard of the public House on the corner of Lowestoft Road and Lower Cliff Road at TG 5254 0379.

Part of the eastern section has been built over since 1945 by Royal Albert Court.
The shelter in the garden of 185 Bells Road, if still present, is hidden by a mass of vegetation.
