Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of World War Two air raid shelters is visible on aerial photographs within the back gardens on Gloucester Aveunue, Connaught Avenue and Kent Avenues, Gorleston (S1). These shelters are visible as earth covered mounds, probably Anderson shelters, and these would have been for the use of the families living in the properties. The site is centred on TG 5209 0346. The area of agricultural land to immediate west of this houses, now St Benets Road, was enclosed with barbed wire in 1944, although the purpose of this defence is not obvious from the available aerial photograph evidence (NHER 42312).

The majority of the shelters are all approximately 3m by 2m and are located within the gardens of numbers 14, 17, 19, 21 and 27 Gloucester Avenue, 1, 4 and 5 Kent Avenue. A shelter is also located in the garden of 14 Connaught Avenue, this has a blast wall protected entrance.
S. Massey (NMP), 20 January 2006.
