Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of linear and curvilinear drainage ditches and banks of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1 to S3). These earthworks cover a large area and are centred on TG 4697 0739. Curvilinear and linear drainage ditches are present on a wide range of different alignments. In the south of the group are linear drainage ditches. These are aligned roughly parallel to the Halvergate Fleet, a major natural channel through the marshland. Curvilinear ditch or channel earthworks also appear to lead into this major extant channel. In the centre of the group around TG 4695 0747 are three linear drainage ditches that lie on a different alignment to the modern drainage pattern. One of these is connected to a linear and curvilinear drainage ditch to its north. It is likely that the curvilinear ditches originated as natural channels and were later incorporated into the drainage pattern. The curvilinear ditches are probably medieval in date with the linear ditches, having a later medieval to post medieval origin.
