Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A probable World War Two structure and two possible air raid shelters are visible on aerial photographs located on the end of Bernard Road, Gorleston (S1 to S2). The structure appears to be tall and circular and is assumed to be military, although its function is not known. The air raid shelters are only visible on one set of aerial photographs, dating to 1945 and therefore may not be definite wartime shelters (S2). The site is centred on TG 5274 0298 and is now the site of 29 Bernard Road.

The circular structure is located at TG 5274 0299 and appears to be approximately 3m in diameter. It is quite tall, although not as tall as the surrounding houses, and tapering in profile. A structure is visible in this position in 1944, however it does not appear to have the same height and tapering profile (S2). In 1945 two mounds are visible to alongside the southern boundary (S3). These were of a similar size and appearance to covered Anderson shelters, however they are not visible in 1944 (S2) and therefore it not definite that these mounds do cover air raid shelters and these were not mapped.
S. Massey (NMP), 23 January 2006.
