Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The remains of a World War Two roadblock and possible associated defensive structure are visible on wartime aerial photographs on England’s Lane and Lowestoft Road, Gorleston (S1) and (S2). The site is centred on TG 5255 0394, although this point does not correspond to an archaeological feature on the ground. There was a barrage balloon mooring on England’s Lane (NHER 42291) and these structures would have defended the approach to this site.

In 1944 all that remains of this roadblock are markings on the road surface, which indicate that two horizontal bars or rails for erected across Lowestoft Road just before the England’s Lane junction. On England’s Lane itself at TG 5257 0394 is another set of marks, consisting of a circular feature and an angular block, 3m across. It is assumed that a defensive structure stood at this location earlier in the war, potentially a gun emplacement of some sort.
