Summary

Earthworks of linear and curvilinear drainage ditches and channels of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs. Some of these ditches are marked on the 1843 Burgh Castle tithe map. It is likely that the curvilinear ditches originated as natural channels, which were then incorporated into the drainage pattern at a later date.

Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of linear and curvilinear drainage ditches and channels of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). These earthworks are centred on TG 4800 0580 in an area of former marshland. The linear ditches at TG 4795 0573 and TG 4805 0588 were shown on the 1843 Burgh Castle tithe map (S2) as extant drainage ditches. However, other linear ditches, further to the north at TG 4812 0596 and TG 4802 0601, are not marked on this map. It is likely that the curvilinear ditches in this group of earthworks originated as natural channels. These were incorporated into the drainage pattern, possibly during the medieval period. Some of the sections of curvilinear ditch, such as those at TG 4805 0597 and TG 4895 0586, were also marked on the tithe map (S3). It is probable that these curvilinear and linear drainage ditches are of medieval to post medieval date.
