Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of World War Two air raid shelters are visible on aerial photographs on Frederick Road, Gorleston-on-Sea (S1). The site is centred on TG 5241 0499. The site consists of ten surface shelters and one possible sub-surface or basement shelter. These shelters would have been for the use of local inhabitants. All of the surface shelters are 4m long and 2m wide and have a concrete roof, although it is possible that the walls were brick built. A possible sub-surface or basement shelter may be indicated by a rectangular slot cut into the floor of the former buildings at TG 5242 0499. It is possible that this group of shelters has been placed within an area of bomb damage, although this is not certain. The buildings consist of a roofless shell and they do not appear particularly damaged, as you would expect if they had been bombed. A bomb is recorded as having fell in Frederick Road on June 15th 1941 (S2), but it failed to detonate and therefore must have caused little damage.
