Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Two World War Two minefields are visible as lines of disturbed ground on aerial photographs taken in 1940 (S1)-(S6), between TG 4989 1954 and TG 5025 1824. They were the southernmost element of a line of minefields stretching along the sand dunes between Hemsby to the south and Horsey Gap to the north. They are visible as lines of disturbed ground, the extent of which has been mapped. On the earliest consulted aerial photographs of the site, taken in August 1940 (S1)-(S2), only the northern minefield is visible. The longer southern field had been laid by September of that year (S3)-(S5). The mines were removed after the war and no obvious traces of the site are visible on recent aerial photographs (S7). It should be noted that the minefields were often only partially visible on the consulted aerial photographs and that consequently some parts were sketched instead of being mapped from a rectified part of a photograph. In addition, due to a lack of suitable control points, photo rectification for this area was poor.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 31 January 2006.
