Summary

A possible World War Two air raid shelter is visible on aerial photographs at the end of Marine Parade, Gorleston Cliffs. This consists of a covered structure with two rectangular entrances and a circular vent. It is probable that this is a communal civilian shelter, although it would also probably have been used by the troops manning the defences along this section of cliffs, see NHER 42350 for details of defences. Another communal air raid shelter is located on the cliffs 80m to the south (NHER 42349), although this is much larger.

A possible World War Two air raid shelter is visible on aerial photographs at the end of Marine Parade, Gorleston Cliffs (S1)-(S4). The shelter is centred on TG 5289 0339 and has possibly been constructed by September 1940 (S1), as a structure is just visible in the far ground of the oblique aerial photograph, but definitely by February 1941 (S2).

The shelter consists of a roughly oblong earthen mound, measuring approximately 15m by 9m, into which two rectangular cuts or entrances have been dug. At the rear of the mound is a circular hole or vent (S4). This shelter looks less finished than other communal shelters of this type, such as the nearby NHER 42349.
