Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
An area of World War Two barbed wire and scaffolding obstructions is visible on aerial photographs on the beach and cliffs at Gorleston-on-Sea (S1)-(S2). These would have protected the beach and coastal approach to Gorleston-on-Sea. The barbed wire runs from the South Pier in the north to the Links Coastal Battery to the south (NHER 42473) and forms part of the defences associated with the battery. Beach and anti-tank scaffolding also block the Lower Esplanade. The whole site is centred on TG 5304 0263.
The barbed wire obstruction runs from TG 5304 0341 by the South Pier and continues south along the beach. At TG 5304 0263 it forms an enclosed area around pillbox NHER 42356, then it continues towards the Links Battery. Other stretches of barbed wire that butt up to this line from inland have been recorded as part of the Coastal Battery site, see NHER 42473 for details. In addition to the barbed wire, the Lower Esplanade has been blocked off with scaffolding, running from TG 5305 0241 to TG 5310 0200, at which point the scaffolding continues onto the beach to TG 5312 0182, forming a further beach obstacle in front of the Links Battery (S2).
