Summary

A small hut visible as an extant structure on Winterton Dunes on aerial photographs taken between 1944 and 1946 may have been a military structure associated with nearby coastal defences, such as the Coastal Artillery Searchlight Battery (NHER 42454) approximately 55m to the northeast. Alternatively, it could have been a non-military hut, perhaps used by a fisherman. There is no trace of it on more recent aerial photographs of the area.

Map

February 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A small hut is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs taken between 1944 and 1946 (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 5017 1895. Its wartime construction (it is not visible on aerial photographs taken in 1940, e.g. (S4)) and its location on a stretch of coastline which was heavily defended during World War Two suggests that it may have been a military structure. It was perhaps associated with other defences visible in the area, such as the Coastal Artillery Searchlight Battery (NHER 42454) located approximately 55m to its northeast. No trace of the hut is visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site, e.g. (S5), and it may have been demolished. Alternatively, it might have had a non-military use, by a fisherman for example. It should be noted that due to a lack of adequate control points, rectification of photographs for this site was poor and that consequently the location of the hut should be regarded as approximate.
