Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A line of World War Two gun emplacements is visible on aerial photographs on the top of Gorleston Cliffs (S1)-(S4). These gun emplacements would have formed part of the wider network of cliff top defences protecting Gorleston-on-Sea, see NHER 42347 to 42348 and 42350 for similar groups of emplacements. The Gorleston Links Coastal Battery is also located along the cliffs to the south (NHER 42473) and a possible World War Two radio site is located immediately inland (NHER 42474). The site is centred on TG 5305 0224, with the line of five gun emplacements running from TG 5303 0233 to TG 5306 0217
All of the gun emplacements appear quite insubstantial and temporary in construction and have been built by August 1940 (S1). They are generally circular in shape, 3-5m in diameter and surrounded by an embankment of either earth or sandbags, with a central weapons or gun pit.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 January 2006.
