Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A pair of possible World War Two defensive structures, overlooking the former Gorleston railway station, is visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2). One of the structures may be a gun emplacement, although it is possible that both features are associated with the railway and not actually military in origin. The site is centred on TG 5254 0344, although this point does not correspond to an archaeological feature on the ground.

The possible gun emplacement is located at TG 5253 0344 and consists of a potential gun position sitting on top of large rectangular concrete base, 5-6m across, cut into the railway siding. A second possible defensive structure to the east, overlooking the access down to the track and station. It is square and measures 1.5m across. Both structures are visible in February 1941 (S1). The smaller structure is still visible in August 1945, however only the base remains of the possible gun emplacement (S2).
