Full Description
February 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two military site of unknown function is visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TG 4999 1744. It made use of an existing holiday camp (now known as Seacroft Holiday Camp) whose communal buildings would have provided ready-made facilities. It does not appear to have been used for the accommodation of troops, however; the chalets visible at the camp in September 1940 (S5) had been largely removed by December of that year (S1). By May 1944, when it is first clearly visible on the consulted aerial photographs (S2), the site consisted of a number of pre-war buildings, vehicles and areas of disturbed ground and pits. It extended throughout the holiday camp and perhaps into the corner of the adjacent field to the east, although the signs of activity in the latter could be agricultural rather than military. No features were permanent or well defined enough to warrant mapping but the extent of the site has been mapped. There is no evidence on recent aerial photographs of the site, e.g. (S6), that any trace of the camp’s military occupation is now visible on the ground.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 7 February 2006.
