Full Description
February 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two road block is visible as structures and marks on the road surface on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 5159 0882. The road block would have controlled access along New Road, now the A47, one of the major routes in and out of Great Yarmouth. It consisted of four concrete blocks (their shape is rather uncertain), two on each side of the road. Between these, linear marks are visible on the road surface, only the extent of which has been mapped. These probably mark lines of sockets in the road surface into which vertical anti tank rails or bent pins, for example, could have been slotted when necessary. The road block had been largely removed by 1945 (S3). This part of the road was subsequently remodelled and the site is now part of a verge. No surviving remains of the road block have been identified on recent aerial photographs of the site (S4).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 9 February 2006.
