Summary

A small circular structure visible on the southern bank of Breydon Water on aerial photographs taken in 1944-5 may have been a circular pillbox of World War One or World War Two date. Great Yarmouth was regarded as a significant invasion target and was provided with fortifications of various types during both wars. This pillbox was perhaps sited to guard Breydon Water and the River Yare. The structure was demolished after the end of World War Two.

Map

February 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A small circular structure is visible standing on the south bank of Breydon Water on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 5136 0795. It may have been a circular pillbox, dating to either World War One or World War Two. It is comparable, for example, to those illustrated in Dobinson 1996 (S4). It could instead have been a civilian structure, perhaps associated with boats using the riverbank. Later aerial photographs, for example (S5), demonstrate that it has been demolished since the end of the World War Two.
