Summary

A World War Two Type 24 pillbox which stood on drained marshland to the west of Great Yarmouth is visible as an extant building on aerial photographs taken from 1944 onwards. On the earliest of these it was camouflaged as a shed. It was one of a cluster of pillboxes and other World War Two defences identified in this area; others include another pillbox (NHER 32657) located approximately 150m to the northeast and a larger group of defences (NHER 42513) 210m to the south. These were presumably sited to protect the town in the event of an attack on its landward side. The pillbox described here has now been demolished.

Map

February 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two Type 24 pillbox is visible as an extant building on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TG 5128 0714. The earliest consulted aerial photographs on which the pillbox is visible were taken in 1944, see (S1)-(S2). At this time, the pillbox was partially covered with a superstructure, camouflaging it as a shed (see (S3)). A small structure visible immediately to its south on the 1944 aerial photographs may have been an associated defence, but it was not clear enough to interpret with any certainty and consequently has not been mapped. The pillbox is also visible, free of its disguise, on later aerial photographs of the area, see (S4). On several photographs the concrete base on which the pillbox stands is partially visible; the base has not been mapped by the NMP. Recent aerial photographs of the site, for example (S5), demonstrate that the pillbox has now been demolished.
