A World War Two type 22 pillbox and a pair of spigot mortar emplacements were recorded within field boundaries to the east of Sidegate Road by the Norfolk Defensive Structures Survey (S1). The site is centred on TG 5178 0095. The pillbox and the western spigot mortar emplacement are visible on the aerial photographs (S2). The northern spigot mortar emplacement is not visible and may be hidden by a tree at that approximately location. These defensive structures form part of a much wider network of defences, which consists of a long distance anti-tank ditch, barbed wire obstruction, roadblocks, pillboxes and gun emplacements, see NHER 42262 for details. Some of these structures survive and have been recorded by the Norfolk Defensive Structures Survey, see NHER 42522- 42530.
The pillbox is located TG 5178 0093 and the western spigot mortar emplacement at TG 5175 0094.
S. Massey (NMP), 15 February 2006.
