NHER 26839 (Monument record) - Earthwork of post medieval sea bank

April 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Linear bank, 300m long and at least 38m wide, visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1) and 1953 (S2). It runs alongside the Heacham Harbour channel and may be a post medieval sea defence bank. Although it appears quite low and would probably not provide any great protection. = It may be related to the water meadow system to the immediate east (NHER 26837), although the bank may be positioned on top of the western edge of the meadows, as these features may be seen to continue o the northwest of the bank (NHER 26840). On the 1946 RAF photography military activity seems to have been taking place on top of the bank (NHER 26841). It is possible that the bank is also World War Two in date, however it does not appear to be a new feature, judging by its condition in 1946.
