Full Description
April 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks and earthworks of unknown date mapped from aerial photographs taken by the RAF in 1945 (S1), the Ordnance Survey in 1967 (S2) and Meridian photography from 1969 (S3). Site consists of several groups of banked and ditched linear features all roughly parallel to one another and a stretch of bank. The bank runs from TF 6714 3650 to 6717 3662. It is 120m long and up to 4m wide. To the east of the road are four banks, all approximately 5m wide, with closely set ditches either side. The largest of the group runs from TF 6729 3652 to TF 6724 3653. The other three are clustered around TF 6732 3657. The banks and ditches look quite pronounced on the 1944 RAF aerial photographs. They do not appear to be ridges and furrows. It is possible that they are individual field boundaries, although they are quite close together. t is possible that the ditches on the western side of the road are continuations of the same features. These ditches vary in length from 25m to 60m, and from 2m to 5m in width. Although the features look quite dissipated by the plough and also may be holding water. It is possible that they are part of a drainage system, although they may equally be part of a field system. The date of these features is unknown, although they may all be medieval to post medieval in date.
S. Massey (NMP), 19 April 2002.
