Full Description
April 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Series of earthwork banks and ditches surrounding the Eaton farm site visible on NLA oblique aerial photographs from 1992 (S1) and BKS vertical aerial photographs from 1988 (S2). Map evidence from as recent as 1902-7 suggests that the farm has shrunk considerably, with many buildings disappearing. A slight hollow way can be seen to lead from a sub-rectangular sunken area, a pond located at TF 6972 3632 to the site of former buildings at TF 6964 3628. A second possibly pond is located at TF 6962 3638, it is an oblong sunken area 40m by 9m. Several ditches are apparent, these all seem to represent old boundaries associated with the farm. An alignment of three low banks runs from TF 6970 3634 to TF 6958 3642. These banks vary in length from TF 20-50m and are between 2m and 6.5m wide. To the east is an area of ditches, centred on TF 6987 3626. These linears may be part of the water management system or water meadows that runs along the Heacham river valley (NHER 26835), as several of the ditches appear to run towards the river. At TF 6979 3630 is a sub-rectangular raised platform, 32m by 20m, this is surrounded by ditches. It is possible that this is a building platform of some sort. These features are likely to be related to medieval-post-medieval activity, finds in this area also suggest this date.
S. Massey (NMP), 29 April 2002.
