Full Description
March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A pair of World War Two spigot mortar emplacements is visible on aerial photographs on South Denes, Great Yarmouth (S1)-(S3). One of these gun positions has have been cut into the foundations of the former World War One seaplane station (NHER 13631). The Denes was also heavily defended with a variety of pillboxes, gun positions, trenches and barbed wire, see NHER 43323 for overview of area. The site is centred on TG 5320 0465, although this point does not correspond to either spigot mortar emplacement, which are located at TG 5319 0465 and TG 5321 0465. Both sites are visible as the central concrete pedestal, sitting within a circular pit. The western example has two slots cut into the walls of the gun pit.
S. Massey (NMP), 6 March 2006.
