Summary

A group of World War Two military structures is visible on aerial photographs as standing buildings on South Denes, Great Yarmouth. The military function of these structures is not known, although given the coastal location, it is possible that it was associated with observation or communications activities. The structures sit within an area of barbed wire and scaffolding obstructions. These form part of a much wider area of defences on the South Denes, consisting of a variety of pillboxes, gun positions, trenches and barbed wire (see NHER 43323 for overview of area).

The site is centred on TG 5316 0521. The site consists of a group of buildings enclosed within a rectangular walled or fenced area. An L-shaped building occupies a large part of the enclosure, 18m long and 11m wide. A small feature can be seen projecting from the roof. It is not clear whether this is a chimney or an aerial. In July 1944 a square concrete structure is visible in the northeastern corner of the enclosure (S2). This has been removed by October 1945 (S3). In the centre of the enclosure is a group of three concrete structures within a rectangular blast wall. The largest of the group measures 7m by 2m and the other two are both 2-3m by 2m. An additional pitched-roof rectangular structure stands in the southeastern corner of the enclosure. The L-shaped building is still standing within the rectangular enclosure.
