Full Description
March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two railblock is visible as a linear pattern of marks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 5166 0669. The marks probably represent lines of concrete sockets, intended to hold vertical or bent anti tank rails; only their extent has been mapped. The railblock may have comprised other elements, such as concrete blocks (see (S1)) but these could not be identified with any certainty and consequently have not been mapped. The site is comparable to both other railblocks mapped at Great Yarmouth, such as NHER 27412 approximately 2km to the northeast, and to roadblocks identified in the same area, fpr example the block recorded as part of NHER 43304 approximately 800m to the southeast. In the post-war period the railway line (NHER 13574) was removed and the site is now occupied by Pasteur Road. There is no evidence on aerial photographs that any part of the World War Two defence still survives.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 7 March 2006.
