Full Description
March 2005. Norfolk NMP.
The site of a World War Two roadblock, consisting of a double row of five concrete cubes is visible on aerial photographs blocking Browston Lane (S1), which runs across Lound Run reservoirs at the eastern end of the Fritton Decoy (NHER 13527). This roadblock marks the parish boundary between Belton with Browston and Lound and is centred on TG 4974 0083.Similar roadblocks were constructed on the roads crossing the decoy and reservoirs to the east, on Hall Road (NHER 42233) and on the Blue Doors Loke (NHER 30907). All of these roadblocks are positioned along the parish boundaries, now the Norfolk/Suffolk border. Sections of barbed wire have been placed around the road junctions to the north, see NHER 42464 for details.
In July 1944 this defensive feature consists of two rows of five concrete cubes (S1). These cubes cannot be seen on aerial photographs from 1964 (S2). It is possible that they have been moved to the side of the road, as with other nearby roadblocks, but the dense tree cover at the side of the road is obscuring their new position. A site visit would be needed to ascertain whether they survive.
S. Massey (NMP), 7 March 2005.
