Summary

Three small structures visible on aerial photographs taken in 1945 were almost certainly air raid shelters, probably Anderson shelters without their covering of earth or sandbags, or a similar proprietary design. They lay in what appears to have been a yard, close to the junction of Camden Road and Pier Place. Small shelters of this type were generally intended for the use of a single family or household, and numerous examples are visible in residential areas such as this on low-level aerial photographs of Great Yarmouth taken at the end of the war. There is no evidence on more recent aerial photographs that any remnant of the shelters described here now survives above ground.

Map

March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Three probable World War Two air raid shelters are visible as extant structures on aerial photographs taken in 1945 (S1), centred at TG 5274 0667. They lay in a probable yard off Camden Road and were almost certainly used by the residents of nearby houses. Their size and form suggest that they could have been Anderson shelters, although in 1945, at least, they lacked the covering of earth or other material which was an important part of shelters of that type. There is no evidence on more recent aerial photographs that any remnant of the shelters now survives above ground and they were probably levelled soon after the end of the war.
