April-October 2010. Excavation and Watching Brief.
A minor programme of archaeological work took place during alterations and extensions to Friary Cottage and an adjacent outbuilding. During the watching brief two medieval walls were identified immediately to the south of Friary Cottage. The alignment of these walls suggests that they were probably part of the same structure as that which is known to have been partially incorporated into the fabric of Friary Cottage. Medieval pits and a medieval or post-medieval well were also recorded in the vicinity of Friary Cottage itself. The adjacent outbuilding was shown to have had a much larger post-medieval precursor that may have been built as a dwelling. This earlier structure incorporated the remains of a medieval wall that had probably been part of the friary precinct wall.
See NHER 61876 and assessment report (S4) for further details.

January 2011 -September 2012. Building Survey.
Report cencudes that the original cottage was longer to the west and the core of the building was late medieval on the evidence of one surviving corner with in situ ashlar quoins and associated flint facing. Large buttress of re-used masonry added. Many fragments of re-used worked stone in the building. Building is largely refaced with clunch. Fragemnet of former wall on south elavation suggesting a former narrow wing. Late 16th or early 17th century refurbishmnet which shortened the building adding a clunch gable-end with brick quoins. It had a steeply pitched roof with parapet gables supprted on kneeler corbels of re-used stone. Spiral stair at south east corner connecting with exterior only. It was formerly inside the hypothetical south east wing. Stack added to west end. In 19th century the side walls were heightened in brickwork and casement fenestration added.
