Summary

A group of three cropmark ditches or drains of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs to the immediate east of Ingham Fen, Lessingham. These cropmarks are located in-between two large, but dispersed field systems of possible Iron Age or Roman date (NHER 42135, 43386) and it is possible that the cropmarks are similar in date and character. However their location on the edge of the former alluvial fen area could indicate that they are post medieval drainage features.

Map

September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A group of three cropmark ditches or drains of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs to the immediate east of Ingham Fen, Lessingham (S1). The site is centred on TG 4044 2714. These cropmarks are located in-between two large, but dispersed field systems of possible Iron Age or Roman date (NHER 42135, 43386) and it is possible that the cropmarks are similar in date and character. The three ditches do broadly share the same alignment as that exhibited by the larger field systems. NHER 42135 and 43386 are both located on the loamy and sandy soils that cover Ingham and the coastal area between Hempstead and Eccles. These three ditches are located on the edge of this loamy soil and the former alluvial fen area. It is therefore also possible that these three linear ditches are related to post medieval drainage.
