Summary

This large broad is separated from the river by a relatively narrow band of uncut peat. A flooded peat working, presumably of medieval date, has been identified here. The broad has been a major boating venue since the 1860s and was the subject of a celebrated court case in the 1890s where the High Court ruled that the broad itself was private property.

Map

Large by-passed broad, separated from the river by a relatively narrow band of uncut peat. Flooded peat working, presumably of medieval date. The broad was the subject of a celebrated court case in the 1890s where the High Court ruled that the broad itself was private property (although the victorious owner only levied a charge for fishing and allowed continued access for sailing although not for mooring). The broad has been a major venue for sailing and boating since the 1860s.
