Full Description
March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible bank is visible as a soilmark and slight earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1940-41 (S1)-(S2), between TG 5066 1658 and TG 5094 1647. Its date and function are unknown. It is not depicted on any of the consulted historic maps, such as Hemsby Enclosure Map (S3). It probably acted as a boundary of some kind, perhaps within a former field system. It may be contemporary with similar banks visible on the same aerial photographs, e.g. NHER 43441 210m to the north or NHER 43442 325m to the northwest. Like these other sites, the fact that it is only visible on photographs taken in 1940-41 means that its archaeological origin is uncertain. A substantial trench was excavated at the southeast end of the bank by February 1941 (S2); this formed part of the World War Two anti invasion defences recorded as NHER 15119.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 27 March 2006.
