Full Description
March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible bank is visible as a soilmark and slight earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1940-41 (S1)-(S2), between TG 5055 1684 and TG 5069 1679. Its date and function are unknown. It is not depicted on any of the consulted historic maps, such as Hemsby Enclosure Map (S3). It probably acted as a boundary of some kind, perhaps within a former field system. It may be contemporary with similar banks visible on the same aerial photographs, e.g. NHER 43440 210m to the north or NHER 43442 88m to the west. Like these other sites, the fact that it is only visible on photographs taken in 1940-41 means that its archaeological origin is uncertain. At the same time, although its southeast end leads to a field corner, this is not the case with its northwest end suggesting that it is not a modern agricultural feature.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 27 March 2006.
