Full Description
March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a group of post medieval field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs within arable land in Bradwell (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 5011 0455. The cropmarks of a possible medieval to post medieval post mill is located within one of the fields to the east of the site (NHER 43448). These cropmarks appear to overlie fragments of earlier field systems, possibly dating to the Iron Age and Roman periods (NHER 43454).
The field boundaries are broadly aligned along the same axis as those still in existence and following the Cley Road, forming long and narrow fields, which are on average 70m wide. Some of these field boundaries are marked on the 1842 Bradwell Tithe map (S3), although the majority of them have been removed by this date, in particular those surrounding the mill. Two double ditched linear features are visible running from perpendicular to the majority of the field boundaries and the road. These follow the same alignment, either side of the Cley Road, running from TG 4991 0464 to TG 5010 0466and from TG 5028 0468 to TG 5034 0469, perpendicular to the road and fields. These are likely to have been trackways running in-between the main fields.
