Summary

An earthwork and vegetation mark visible on aerial photographs marks the site of a pond. The date of the pond is unknown, as it is not depicted on any of the consulted historic maps. It is possible that it is a modern feature, and it certainly appears to have been re-excavated in the 20th century. At the same time, however, it appears to be present in 1944 and, like similar ponds in the surrounding area, it may have been associated with the use of the marshes for grazing stock in the medieval and post medieval periods.

Map

April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A pond is visible as a water-filled earthwork on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5005 0867. It has the appearance of a modern feature, but the site seems to correspond with a vegetation mark and perhaps a slight earthwork visible on aerial photographs taken in 1944 (S2). This suggests that it was probably a pre-war feature, re-excavated in the post-war period. As it is not depicted on any of the consulted historic maps, such as Acle Tithe Map (S3), it is difficult to date. It may pre-date the maps and date to the early 19th century or earlier. It might perhaps have been associated with the use of the area for grazing stock in the medieval and post medieval periods. It is surrounded by the sinuous earthworks and vegetation marks of former creeks; these appear to have been natural features and consequently have not been mapped by the NMP. A number of former drains are also visible, including a drain depicted on the Tithe Map (S3) which passed close to the northeast side of the pond. These too have not been mapped by the NMP, as they appear to be minor drains of relatively recent origin. It is clear from aerial photographs of the site taken in 1989 (S4) that the pond has now been levelled.
