Full Description
April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two air raid shelter is visible as a structure and earthwork on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5307 0685. It was constructed between February 1941 and March 1944 (compare (S2) and (S3)), and was one of numerous shelters of various different types built within Great Yarmouth. The location of this shelter, within a municipal garden, and its relatively large size compared to the small shelters visible in private gardens suggest that it was probably a public shelter, intended for the use of people caught in the streets during a raid. Alternatively, since much of the seafront was under military control during the war, it might perhaps have been provided for military personnel. Recent aerial photographs indicate that the site has now been levelled.
The shelter was either a surface shelter or partially sunken. It consisted of what appears to have been a concrete or masonry structure, part of which is visible, covered by earth. An entrance is visible at its north end. A shaft located towards its south end was probably for ventilation.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 10 April 2006.
