Summary

A possible World War Two air raid shelter is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs. Its small size and its location within an enclosed garden suggest that it was probably a private shelter, intended for the use of a single family or household. It may have been an Anderson shelter, or a similar proprietary design. Recent aerial photographs indicate that the site has now been levelled.

Map

April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 5305 0953. It lay in the garden of 1 Tennyson Road. This, together with its small size, suggests that it was a private shelter intended for the use of this particular household. It may have been an Anderson shelter or a similar proprietary design. It should be noted that there is no clear evidence that the earthwork did in fact cover a shelter, and it could just be a mound of earth or other material associated with the use of the garden. Its neat shape and the fact that it is visible in both 1944 and 1945, however, suggests that it is more likely to represent an air raid shelter. Recent aerial photographs of the site, e.g. (S3), demonstrate that the earthwork has now been levelled.
