Summary

A probable World War Two air raid shelter is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs. Its small size and its location within an enclosed garden suggest that it was probably a private shelter, intended for the use of a single family or household. It may have been an Anderson shelter, or a similar proprietary design. Recent aerial photographs indicate that the site has now been levelled.

Map

April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A probable air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5242 0976. It lay in the garden of 112 Caister Road. This, together with its small size, suggests that it was a private shelter intended for the use of this particular household. It may have been an Anderson shelter or a similar proprietary design. It should be noted that the postulated shelter is partially obscured by shadow, and it is difficult to make out any detail that would confirm its identification as a shelter. It might instead be an outbuilding or a garden feature of some kind. Its appearance is similar, however, to other small shelters mapped elsewhere in Great Yarmouth, and this seems the most probable interpretation. Recent aerial photographs of the site, e.g. (S2), demonstrate that the earthwork has now been levelled.
