Full Description
April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5249 0945. It lay in the back garden of 17 Keyes Avenue. This, together with its small size, suggests that it was a private shelter intended for the use of this particular household. It should be noted that the postulated shelter could instead be an outbuilding, such as a shed, but its profile appears to be curved which is reminiscent of an Anderson shelter or similar proprietary designs. It does not appear to be present on photographs taken in July 1944 (S2), which may indicate that it was camouflaged (whether deliberately or otherwise) or that it was merely a shed constructed after that date. A third possibility is that it was an air raid shelter, but that at the end of the war it was brought here from another site to serve as an outbuilding. More recent aerial photographs of the site, e.g. (S3), demonstrate that the structure has now been demolished or removed.
