Full Description
April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of approximately eight probable air raid shelters dating to World War Two are visible as earthworks, partially covered by vegetation, on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5244 0888. Some lay in the back gardens of 13 to 19 Caister Road, the others in an adjoining yard to the south of a second terrace of houses. This location, together with their small size, suggests that they were private shelters, each intended for the use of a particular household. The earthworks are not particularly clear on the consulted aerial photographs, and consequently it is difficult to be certain how many shelters were present. Some of the mounds could cover more than one structure; others may not cover shelters at all, but could just be piles of material such as fodder. The structures underlying the mounds may have been Anderson shelters or similar proprietary designs. Recent aerial photographs of the area, e.g. (S2), demonstrate that the shelters have almost certainly now been levelled.
