Summary

The cropmarks of a ring ditch, probably the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs to the immediate south of Sidegate Road on the Hopton on Sea parish boundary. In 2011 a trial trench was excavated across this cropmark, revealing segments of a corresponding ring-ditch that were found to be relatively narrow and shallow. The small number of finds recovered included Iron Age pottery sherds and a probable loomweight fragment, suggesting that this ring-ditch was not necessarily Bronze Age but potentially associated with a domestic structure of later date. These cropmarks were previously recorded as part of NHER 11788.

Map

April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a ring ditch, probably the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs to the immediate south of Sidegate Road on the Hopton on Sea parish boundary (S1)-(S2). This was previously recorded as part of NHER 11788 and is centred on TG 5181 0174. Other ring ditch and round barrow sites are located nearby, such as NHER 43516, 43351, 43553-4, 43557).

The ring ditch is 14m in diameter. The Sidegate Road cuts the northern arc of the ring ditch. There is also a slight gap in the cropmark to the east, although it is not clear whether this is break in the actual ditch or the cropmark response.
S. Massey (NMP), 11 April 2006.

August-September 2011. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site to south of Sidegate Lane.
A trench excavated across this cropmark ring-ditch exposed two corresponding curvi-linear ditches that were both around 1m wide and only 0.3m deep. The small number of finds recovered included six Middle to Late Iron Age pottery sherds, a fragment of a loomweight or thatch weight of Iron Age/Roman type and several presumably residual flints of Neolithic/Bronze Age date. A sub-rectangular pit that would have lain close to the centre of the ring-ditch was left unexcavated.
See report (S3) and NHER 62748 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 June 2018.
